MDC-T Zengeza East legislator, Alexio Musundire, is wanted by the police for allegedly assaulting a fellow senior party official in Chitungwiza on Saturday.
The incident occurred at the MDC-T Chitungwiza provincial party offices located at Chikwanha Shopping Centre. Musundire reportedly assaulted the party's secretary for healing and reconciliation, Mr Bernard Mazhindu.
National police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, yesterday confirmed the incident. "We are keen to question Musundire (45) on allegations of assaulting the party's secretary for healing and reconciliation in Chitungwiza province, Bernard Mazhindu (42)," he said.
Chief Supt Nyathi said the incident occurred around 11am during a meeting to restructure the party. Musundire is alleged to have confronted Mazhindu accusing him of sabotage. He punched him and disappeared later.
"He hit him with fists before he fled from the scene and a report was made to the police," said Chief Supt Nyathi.
On Saturday night police officers in Chitungwiza phoned Musundire but he was not picking up his phone. Police said they were keen to question him over the alleged assault case. MDC-T has been rocked by intra-party violence and factionalism and some party officials, among them former deputy-treasurer Mr Elton Mangoma, were assaulted in the presence of party leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.
In April, MDC-T national spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora was questioned by police for allegedly assaulting an MDC-T supporter near the party's Harvest House headquarters in Harare. Mr Mwonzora was invited to Harare Central police Law and Order section to answer allegations that he and three other people assaulted Leonard Dendera at Harvest House.
An MDC-T official lost a cellphone and US$200 cash when he was assaulted by fellow supporters as he sought to join a meeting at the party headquarters at Harvest House in Harare in April.
Police said Tichaona Munyanyi (56), the organising secretary for Harare, was assaulted by Shakespear Mukoi following an altercation.
It is believed that Mukoi had barred Munyanyi from entering an executive council meeting after accusing him of being aligned to the party's expelled deputy treasurer-general, Mr Mangoma.
