An unclothed sleepwalker was thoroughly bashed when he took to the streets in the dead of the night. Marshal Makuyu (25) of Chikwamba Village in Gokwe learnt to sleep with clothes on, after he was labelled a witch and assaulted for walking undressed during the night.
It was at around lam when villagers, who were travelling by a scotch-cart from a church gathering bumped into the unclothed man.
Shocked by what they were seeing, they tried to ignore the man as they assumed that he was doing his "night duties".
When they were about to reach Kaguta Business Centre, Makuyu reportedly ran and caught up with them. He demanded to board the scotch-cart and tried to jump on board.
Surprisingly, when they asked the him who he was, he claimed to be a woman identifying himself as Mai Fadzi.
As he continued trying to get onto the scotch-cart, one of the people on the scotch-cart, Fanuel Ndlovu (47), jumped off and assaulted him all over the body.
The unclothed man ran away and they continued with their journey without having identified him.
On the following day, Ndlovu got the shock of his life when police came to his place saying they were laying assault charges against him.
He was told that Makuyu claimed that he beat him during the night when he sleepwalked on the streets. According to Makuyu, he only realised that he was on the street after being thoroughly bashed.
He reportedly came back to his senses. He then ran back to his homestead and because of injuries he sustained, he reported the matter to the police.
Ndlovu was hauled before magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja facing assault charges and he pleaded not guilty, citing the circumstances which led to the assault.
He was lucky to escape custodial sentence when the magistrate postponed passing sentence on condition of three years of good behaviour.
