Female cop bashes pregnant suspect

MUTARE magistrate Langton Mukwengi has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault of a pregnant Mutare woman while in police custody.
The women was in police custody on suspicion of stealing $310.
Naume Mukanakana of Dangamvura, Mutare, told presiding magistrate Mukwengi yesterday that a female officer based at Chisamba Police Station in Sakubva assaulted her despite her pregnancy. She also claimed to be asthmatic.
At law, police officers are not allowed to assault suspects in their custody.
Mukanakana said she would need medical attention as a result of the assault.
Mukwengi remanded her to September 16 to allow the accused to seek medical attention.
He also tasked the State to make an investigation into the allegations.
Mukanakana's plea will be expected to be recorded on September 16.
Mukanakana is facing theft charges following allegations that she stole $310 from Chikomborero Chiwarira on August 29 in Sakubva.
