City Council rakes in $370 000 from kombis

The Harare City Council has raked in more than US$370 000 in fines since the beginning of the commuter omnibus blitz in August.
The Harare City Council's operation to bring sanity to the Harare central business district has turned into a cash cow with US$370 000 having been realised since the beginning of the blitz.
1 875 commuter omnibuses have been impounded to date.
The council is expected to get more cash as more commuter omnibuses are still defying orders and picking up passengers at undesignated dropping zones.
Council tightened screws on commuter omnibuses in a bid to force the commuter omnibuses to conform to the new rules and bring back order to the central business district.
Once a commuter omnibus is impounded for flouting the new procedures, the owner will only be able to collect it after 14 days and he or she will be forced to fork out an amount which is between US$393 and US$1 500.
Commuter omnibus owners have since expressed concern over the exorbitant charges while calling for the city fathers to deal with the drivers who are the offenders.
