A BULAWAYO woman abandoned her two-month-old baby boy in the middle of a road claiming that it was the only way to get the baby's father to fend for his child.
Babra Ncube, 28, of Entumbane suburb, yesterday appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Tancy Dube facing a charge of ill-treatment or neglect of a child.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine months in prison of which three were suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.
Prosecuting, Sibekithemba Dube said the baby was taken to Mpilo hospital by the police.
"The two-month-old baby was dumped in Luveve and picked by a man who later took him to the police. The baby is likely to be taken into an orphanage since the mother showed that she does not want him," she said.
The court heard that on August 27 at around 5PM, Ncube abandoned her baby in the middle of a road at Success Business centre after placing him in a black and pink bag.
The baby was picked up by Emmanuel Sithole who took him to the police.
Ncube pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that she wanted the baby's father to take care of his child.
She said in mitigation: "I left the baby with his father. He is the one who dumped him on the road. He is not supporting his children so I left the baby with him.
"I love my baby and I even visited him at Mpilo hospital where he is. Please, may the court have mercy on me," she said.
