Zimbabwe's electricity woes could be coming to an end

The Zimbabwean government is in talks with three Chinese firms, Shanghai Electric, Shenergy Company Ltd and Nian Jiang who may invest in a 1200 megawatt power plant in Matabeleland North Province, the ZBC reported.

The power plant and coal mining is expected to cost around US$5 billion.

Shanghai Electric specialises in power production, Shenergy Company Ltd on transmission and distribution and Nian Jiang is a stock company with interests in energy and resources.

Zimbabwe is facing a huge power deficit despite improvement in power generation which is hovering around 1200 megawatts.

Kariba South Extension project is expected to add 300 megawatts, while another 300 megawatts will come from Hwange when 7 and 8 units are complete.
