MDC-T faces another fresh split

Speculation is rife that MDC-T could suffer another split should its leadership refuse to back down from its hard line stance over constitutional amendments.

A section of the movement feels the constitutional changes are a departure from the democratic ethos that the party purports to represent.

Battle lines have been drawn over a proposal to create a position for second vice president, with Tsvangirai's deputy Thokozani Khupe unhappy with the development.

Another source of contention is the proposal to give the party president sweeping powers while diluting those of the secretary-general; to avoid further disintegration of the party as happened in 2005 and in April this year.

Two camps have emerged, with a grouping linked to Tsvangirai said to be determined to push through its agenda, damn the consequences.
