MDC Renewal Team newcomer Gorden Moyo yesterday described leader of the main MDC party Morgan Tsvangirai a hero saying it was impossible to document the Zimbabwean history without citing his name.
Speaking at the launch of the formation's manifesto and unveiling of the party's provincial leadership in Bulawayo, Moyo who officially crossed the floor to join the movement said his former boss Tsvangirai was a hero whose vast contributions to the country's politics could not go unrecognized.
"Make no mistake (Morgan) Tsvangirai worked very hard," Moyo said. Morgan is a hero who was the first opposition leader to shake Zanu PF and Mugabe much to the amazement of the world. It is impossible to document this country's history without mentioning his name."
"We don't want to do like Zanu PF which doesn't recognize people and institutions that contributed to the country's political development. Zanu doesn't recognize Zapu in the liberation struggle even in history books used in the school curriculum," Moyo said.
Admittedly Moyo said MDC-T through Tsvangirai's leadership had rose to become a brand but the brand had failed to deliver several times hence the need to renew it.
"I respect Tsvangirai but we need new ideas and new strategies. When an organization fails you change its leadership or its culture," charged Moyo.
"We believe in systems not personalities like Zanu PF members who think Mugabe is Zanu PF and vice versa. We cannot allow an organization in modern democracy to be called using people's names even if it is Tsvangirai."
Moyo said the renewal movement was "ready to cooperate with other political movements that do not subscribe to the 'big brother mentality'."
However the Makokoba legislator and former Parastatals Small and Medium Enterprises minister who worked closely with Tsvangirai during the government of national unity warned that the formation should not engage in the "Tsvangirai rhetoric" because his era had ended.
