A 27-YEAR-OLD Chipinge man was on Tuesday jailed for three years for robbery and theft charges.
Although Tatenda Jumburu of CI Tuzuka Village under Chief Musikavanhu had pleaded not guilty, Chipinge magistrate Mr Makamera Waini convicted him over incriminating evidence which the State had led against him.
The State led by Ms Edith Phiri stated that: "On November 16, 2013 around 11am at Village CI Tuzuka, Jumburu was riding a motor bike in the company of his accomplice who is still at large when they approached Gracious Macharanga and Francesca Nyoni and lied to them that they knew someone who was selling a beast.
"The accused dragged Gracious by her neck and slapped her on the face once and she fell to the ground. He then demanded cash from the first complainant, but she refused saying her husband was the one with cash. The accused persons then took a log and hit the complainant on her left hand and forcibly took a Nokia C3 cellphone from her. The first complainant, Gracious, managed to escape leaving Francesca with the two accused. The two robbed him of $750."
The matter was reported to the police.
"On September 22, Jumburu was arrested after Gracious positively identified him in Chipinge town. The value of the stolen property was $850 and nothing was recovered.
On Count Two, Jumburu broke into his father, Davison Jumburu (67)'s house stole groceries worth $65.
The court heard that on January 13 last year at around 10am, Davison locked his doors and drove his cattle into the grazing area.
Jumburu went to his father's house and broke the window to gain entry.
While inside, he stole 2kg rice, 2kg flour, 2 litres cooking oil, one long-sleeved shirt, one pair of Volcano shoes and $6 and went away. On the same day the complainant learnt of the theft and reported the matter to the police.
Jumburu was sentenced to 66 months in jail for both counts, while 18 months were suspended on condition that the accused paid back the complainants their money and groceries.
