Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has called for unity and discipline in his faction-ridden party where behind-the-scenes jostling for positions is threatening internal cohesion ahead of its much-awaited elective congress set for December.Addressing hundreds of Zanu-PF supporters on Saturday at Harare International Airport after his arrival from the United Nations General Assembly held in New York, Mugabe castigated senior officials some of who have resorted to public verbal attacks against each other as they campaign for positions.
The veteran leader said need for discipline among the senior members, urging them to close ranks for the sake of party cohesion.
"We at the top should be exemplary and show those we lead how things should be done. We need discipline in the party," said Mugabe, 90, who will be seeking reelection during the congress set for Harare.
Factions allegedly led by Vice President Joice Mujuru and Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa are vying for top positions in the ruling party.
Their followers have in recent months engaged in public spats following controversial elections to choose leaderships for the key youth and women's leagues.
