A dispute between two Magunje brothers over who stays at their parents' homestead ended tragically after the younger brother allegedly fatally struck his sibling with a brick.

Ernest Mandere (25) of Chabume Village under Chief Nematombo was last week charged with murder when he appeared before Karoi magistrate Mr Obedience Matare.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to October 6 this year.

According to the court records, Ernest's murder charge arose on the night of September 19 this year when his brother, Patrick (32), allegedly tried to assault him with a hoe handle.

It is believed Patrick had on several occasions protested Ernest's continued stay within the parents' homestead claiming that he was a married man who must wean himself from their parents.

On the fateful night it is alleged Patrick came to Ernest's home with the intention of assaulting him in the bedroom where he was sleeping with his wife.

On failing to force open the door, it is alleged Patrick - who was armed with a hoe handle - tried to accomplish his mission by getting into the room through the window.

This prompted the terrified Ernest, who was then standing with his wife in one corner of the room, to strike Patrick on the forehead using a half -brick that served as one of the legs to their bed.

Patrick fell down and became unconscious.

Ernest later ran around and alerted other relatives about the development before Patrick was ferried to Magunje Hospital.

Patrick died the following day on his way to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he had been further referred to from Karoi Hospital.
