Illegal 'toll gate' in Harare

In a typical case of jumping from a frying pan to a boiling pot, commuter bus crews and motorists who are evading police roadblocks along Chiremba Road in Harare are driving straight into an unofficial toll gate.

It is indeed a dog eat dog in the madness associated with the morning rush hour on Harare's roads. Commuter bus drivers and other truant motorists who play a cat and mouse game with police never tire of new innovations to evade justice.

But for those travelling to and from Epworth and Msasa Park who attempt to evade police road blocks will also have to contend with some illegal barriers in the area popularly known as Mukandabhutsu.

Those in charge of the illegal toll gate collect between R5 and $1 from vehicles passing through the makeshift road.

Borrowing a leaf from the ZINARA tollgates that are manned 24 hours, the gang has also built a makeshift shelter probably in anticipation of the coming rain season.

The menacing toll gate crew could not grant interviews though they claimed the money collected is used to fund construction of a nearby bridge.

Of course, no one can believe such a story and no one, except those at the illegal barrier, know how much is collected everyday and how it is used.

As for the legality of the actions, there is no doubt it is on the wrong side of the law, for the day police will discover its existence will mark its demise.
