Mugabe's lawyer shortlisted to be a High Court judge

Prominent Harare lawyers have made the shortlist of candidates vying to fill vacancies for six High Court judges.
President Robert Mugabe's lawyer Fred Gijima has been shortlisted to be a High Court judge.
The veteran lawyer represented Mugabe in last year's electoral petitions against MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who was requesting election materials and information that he intended to use in contesting last year's presidential election.
Most of the candidates shortlisted have over 15 years' experience in the legal fraternity.
Among some of the candidates are Ticharwa Garabga, who was representing former acting Air Zimbabwe (Private) Limited chief executive officer Innocent Mavhunga in a case in which the former airline boss and Grace Pfumbidzayi were accused of siphoning several millions of dollars from the national airline.
Mavhunga and Pfumbidzayi have since been removed from remand.
Another top lawyer Tawanda Chitapi is also vying for the High Court judge post. He has represented the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in several cases.
Nyaradzo Munangati and Greyson Nyoni are also accomplished lawyers who made the shortlist.
In a statement, the Judicial Service Commission informed the prospective judges to attend interviews at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Harare following an invitation to members of the public. Mugabe has also been asked to nominate suitably qualified persons in terms of section 180 (2) of the new Constitution.
"Commencing at 9am on Tuesday 28 October, at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Harare, the (Judicial Services) Commission will conduct interviews in public for the forty-six candidates," reads the invite.
Some of the requirements for one to be employed as a High Court judge are in terms of Section 179 of the Constitution are that one has to be 40 years of age and must have the relevant experience.
