President Mugabe has appointed Aaron Daniel Tonde Nhepera as the Deputy Director General of the Central Intelligence Organisation with effect from July 6.
Nhepera replaces the late national hero Maynard Livingstone Muzariri who died in April this year.
Announcing the appointment, Minister of State for National Security Sydney Sekeramayi said Nhepera's elevation was in line with his loyalty and dedication to duty.
"The elevation of Cde Nhepera to his new position is not only in keeping with the principle of continuity, but recognition of his commitment and dedication to duty," said Minister Sekeramayi.
Nhepera rose through the ranks of the intelligence service to the position of director (security) and was the longest-serving director in the CIO until his latest appointment.
Nhepera holds a Masters in Business Administration, which he attained in the United Kingdom.
He is a former Zanla cadre who joined the liberation struggle in 1974.
