A FORMER member of the Zimta Co-operative Credit Union (ZCCU) dragged the co-operative to court claiming to be paid back his contributions.

The contributions amounted to $233,78. ZCCU appeared before Mutare magistrate Mr Langton Mukwengi recently and admitted to owing Mr Darlington Gwawawa (34), a teacher at Zhawara Primary School, $233,78.

Gwawawa told the court that he was a member of ZCCU since 1990 up to 2012 when he quit after realising that the union was no longer functioning as per its founding principles.

"I have not been paid since 2012, Your Worship, and I have not received any benefits.

"Since dollarisation, our subscription fees have gone up from $3 to $15 and yet we were no longer enjoying the benefits of being members of the union and when they told us that the subscription fee had gone up from $15 to $20, I decided to quit," said Gwawawa.

Gwawawa told the court that he had been claiming his money from the union, but to no avail since they turned him down each time he approached them.

He was only paid $100 after the union received court papers summoning it to the civil court.

He then approached the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe seeking help as to how he would claim his money from ZCCU.

The CCZ intervened on his behalf, but they did not succeed in getting his money.

He was advised to approach the civil courts.

Representing ZCCU, Joshua Elias admitted to owing Gwawawa some money and said they were in the process of refunding him.

"We have since paid him the sum of $100 to show how serious we are in paying him back his money," said Elias.

In his ruling, Mr Mukwengi ordered ZCCU to pay Gwawawa his money within a period of two months including the legal costs of $42.
