A Harare Policeman Kudakwashe Kapota (23) was today blessed with 15 years of quality jail time after he raped a 20 year old woman who had been gossiping about him. The Officer lied to the victim and said he worked at the President's Office as a Presidential Guard and that he would take here there to fix her if she refused his advances.
The officer had been stationed at Marlborough Police Station.
Harare magistrate Ms Sadra Mpindu sentenced Kapota to 18-years in prison after convicting him of rape and suspended three years for five years. In passing sentence, Ms Mpindu highlighted that Kapota brought the President's office into disrepute.
"What is alarming is that Kapota is a police officer who is under obligation to uphold and enforce the law. The question is who should police the police?
"The offence was deliberate and calculated after lying that he was a member of the presidential guard. "He later arrested the woman, said he was to take her to the Presidential office to explain herself and to be assaulted. Kapota tarnished the image of the office after portraying it as a place where people are assaulted hence putting it in disrepute."
Prosecutor Ms Ressie Nyamombe said on December 13 last year around 8pm Kapota confronted the woman over some rumours she had allegedly been spreading about him.
After haggling with her fora while, Kapota told the woman that she was under arrest. The woman pleaded for mercy and Kapota inquired what she was willing to give to earn the forgiveness.
He then demanded to bed her that night as payment for the transgressions and the woman remained silent. Kapota's friend arrived in a kombi and he boarded with his "catch"
They went to the friend's residence 14 Chigwenhure Road, and the friend disappeared leaving the pair alone to sort out their issues.
Kapota then tried to strip the complainant but she refused and later took them off on her own after more threats. The Officer then raped her once and she dressed up whereupon the friend returned and the duo dropped her off at Samuriwo shopping centre.
The woman narrated the ordeal to her boyfriend and sister who encouraged her to report the matter to the police.
