A MUTARE-BASED soldier, Tawanda Gwidibira, is battling for his life at Mutare Provincial Hospital after he caught fire while attempting to burn his wife with petrol in Sakubva over an undisclosed domestic dispute.

Gwidibira's wife, Deline Nyamunokora (25), is also battling for her life and is currently admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital, Harare, after she sustained serious burns all over the body in the incident that left residents of Sakubva shocked.

Gwidibira was on Thursday remanded from his hospital bed where he is under police watch to October 30 by magistrate Langton Mukwengi.

According to the State, circumstances into the matter are that on October 15 at around 3pm the accused, who is stationed at 3 Brigade Headquarters in Mutare, went to Sakubva where his wife resides.

The two allegedly had a deep misunderstanding which was, however, not disclosed in court papers prompting the military man to take his two minor children to a relative in Dangamvura.

At around 0001hrs of October 16 Gwidibira returned to Sakubva armed with five litres of petrol and forcibly entered the house where the complainant was sleeping.

He then reportedly locked the door from inside so that Nyamunokora would not escape.

According to the State papers, the accused then splashed petrol all over the room and set the room on fire.

Fierce fire gutted the room and in the process both parties were burnt. Nyamunokora is said to have screamed for help and alert neighbours rushed to her house and broke the door and window panes to gain entry.

Neighbours managed to rescue her from the blazing fire while on the other hand the accused also managed to escape from the scene.

Nyamunokora was then rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital, but was further referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in the capital for further treatment.

According to the State, the complainant is in a very critical condition and chances of her survival cannot be ascertained for now. Gwidibira was later arrested and is also battling for life at Mutare Provincial Hospital where he is under police guard.

The State said he had no lawful right to act in the manner that he did and hence he is facing charges of attempted murder.

Cuthbert Bhosha appeared for the State.
