A NEGLIGENT kombi driver has been slapped with a seven-year jail sentence after hitting and killing a passenger in another vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Earlier this year Gift Chikore was prohibited from driving kombi vehicles until 2015, an order which he violated.
He appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Lazarus Murendo where he was convicted.
It is said on October 11 around 7pm, Chikore was driving a commuter omnibus in the Epworth area along Chiremba Road heading to Mbare.
He then smashed into a lorry and the passenger fell on to the tarmac and died on the spot.
Chikore did not stop at the scene to check on the person but drove away only to be intercepted at a business place two kilometres away from the accident scene by other motorists who had seen him committing the offence.
Prosecutor Edmund Ndambakuwa told the court that Chikore was prohibited by the court from driving Class 1 and Class 2 vehicles in January up to next year but he defied that order.
The State also said Chikore was negligent in failing to keep a proper look ahead and to keep control of the vehicle.
