President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday opened the Second Session of the 8th Parliament of Zimbabwe, and said the legislature should focus on aligning laws to the new constitution and pass others to support economic development.
Mugabe, in one of the shortest speeches in recent times, urged legislators to work hard to fulfil the wishes of the electorate, and called for continued peace and unity for the country to attain its development objectives. He called on the country to remain united in its quest to build a solid foundation for sustainable development.
"In fulfilment of its constitutional mandate, Parliament will, during the Second Session of the Eight Parliament, place great emphasis on the alignment of laws and enacting of new legislation that lends support to the attainment of the goals of socio-economic development in general and those of ZimAsset in particular," he said.
During the session, which will begin on November 25, over 10 Bills will be tabled while some laws will be amended.
Legislators from the two major parties represented in Parliament, the ruling Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change attended the opening ceremony.
