A SELF-proclaimed prophet from Bulawayo's Pumula suburb allegedly assaulted his girlfriend last Saturday after she informed him that she was pregnant.
Qhubekani Hlabangani, 33, beat up Elizabeth Nyamukweva, 23, after she told him that she was expecting. He denied responsibility for the pregnancy.
The prophet appeared before Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo facing physical abuse charges. Hlabangani was fined $50 fine, with the option of spending two months in prison if he defaults on the payment.
Prosecuting Mufaro Mageza told how Hlabangani beat up his girlfriend on Saturday morning following a misunderstanding.
"On Saturday, at a bushy area in Pumula at around 7AM, Nyamukweva told Hlabangani that she was pregnant by him. The two had a misunderstanding and Hlabangani could not control himself and assaulted Nyamukweva using stones and hit her on her thigh," said Mageza.
Hlabangani pleaded guilty to the charge.
"I admit that I assaulted her. I could not control myself because the pregnancy is not mine," he said.
He also begged the magistrate to give him time to pay the fine saying he did not immediately have the money. "I am unemployed, Your worship please give me time to pay because I don't want to go to prison. I am a prophet and I raise money through helping people here and there but I will pay the fine," he said.
The magistrate gave him up to November 15 to pay the fine.
