A WOMAN from Mwenezi is demanding three beasts from a man who reneged on a promise to marry her, saying he wasted her time.
Chipo Mapaike, 37, from Chief Maranda's area, allegedly confronted her one time lover, Givemore Menyani, 46, of the same village in the presence of his wife of 10 years and threatened to cause violence.
She accused Menyani of failing to honour his promise to divorce his wife and marry her.
Chief Maranda confirmed the incident which occurred on Thursday last week.
He said Mapaike and her lover are set to appear before the chiefs' court for sentence.
Chief Maranda told Chronicle that the two engaged in an illicit love affair despite Mapaike knowing that Menyani was married.
"I can confirm receiving a report to the effect that Mapaike confronted her married boyfriend demanding compensation of three beasts. It's said Menyani had allegedly promised Mapaike that he would divorce his wife and marry her but that never materialised. Mapaike is alleging that she has been in a relationship with Menyani for quite a long time despite knowing his marital status. She argued that she now deserves to be either his wife or be compensated with three beasts for time lost," said Chief Maranda.
He added: "The matter is now before my court and the couple will appear next week for the final verdict. The matter is a bit funny because the woman confessed that she knew that the man was customarily married."
Chief Maranda said people should not lose their dignity to such levels and such cases show how traditional values have been compromised.
"This case is testimony of the fact that people's values have been perforated. On the other hand, it also teaches men not to engage in extra marital affairs. This is my first time to deal with such a case in my area and the bad part of it is that the woman concerned was dating a married man and now wants to disturb his marriage.
"Traditional values have gone to the dogs and it's a matter of time before we witness worse things than this," he said.
