Zimbabwe in critical shortage of pathologists

Pathology is a branch of medical science which primarily focuses on the examination of organs, tissues and bodily fluids in order to make a diagnosis of disease.

The country currently operating with nine pathologists, who are mostly based in Harare despite the ever growing burden of cancers and chronic illness which require such experts, an official said yesterday.

UZ School of medicine, professor of Haematology, Andrew Cakana said that the number of pathologists would never meet demand.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the event to mark the International Pathology Day held at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
