A liberation war veteran has been jailed by a Harare magistrate for an effective one and a half years for the illegal possession of an unregistered firearm.

Magistrate Tendai Mahwe initially sentenced Vhiriri (56) to 24 months in jail, before suspending six months on condition of good behaviour for the next five years.

Allegations against Vhiriri according to State prosecutor Francisca Mukumbiri arose in September last year, when Vhiriri was in Harare's city centre in a toilet at Fantasyland where he removed a star pistol from his waist band and placed it on the water tank.

The court heard after relieving himself, Vhiriri went away forgetting the pistol in the toilet.

The pistol was later discovered by Chicken Inn manager Simbarashe Gonyora who handed it over to the police.

In passing sentence, Mahwe said he had taken note that Vhiriri was a first offender and a freedom fighter however he said unregistered guns are frequently used in the commission of offences in a country which generally enjoys peace like Zimbabwe.
