Mudenda likely to battle Mutasa

ZANU-PF Politburo member Jacob Mudenda has been touted as one of the
party's candidates for the party's national chairman's post. He,
however, was coy about the issue yesterday saying it is up to
nominations from the people.
If nominated, Mudenda would battle it out with party secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa, who has already thrown his hat into the ring.
Another politburo member, Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu who is believed to be eyeing the post, said he would only comment when the right time comes.
Deposed war veterans chairman Jabulani Sibanda initially expressed interest in the post but later backtracked.
In an interview yesterday Mudenda, who is also the Speaker of Parliament, said:
"I've never campaigned for any position so if it's the wish of the people then I'll have to see how the situation goes. Also, whatever nomination has to be cleared by the highest authority of the party. For now it's a No, I'm happy where I am as Speaker of the National Assembly."
There
has been debate on the eligibility to contest the national chairperson
post with some members saying it should be reserved for former PF-Zapu
members.
Zanu-PF politburo member Cephas Msipa, who is a former PF Zapu secretary general, is on record as saying he believed the chairman's position should be reserved for former PF-Zapu members.
Dr Ndlovu shares similar sentiments.
Zanu-PF politburo member Professor Jonathan Moyo is on record as saying the Unity Accord does not reserve the Zanu-PF National Chairmanship for former PF-Zapu members in as much as the President's post is not solely for ex-Zanu stalwarts.
Prof Moyo said the Unity Accord did not cater for transient personal ambitions adding that while the President's post was similarly not reserved, it was "folly" to think President Mugabe would be unseated at Congress as the electorate had just given him an overwhelming mandate to lead Zimbabwe until 2018.
Prof Moyo said the late national heroes Joseph Msika and Landa John Nkomo rose to the national chairmanship and later to VP on merit not because they were ex-PF-Zapu.
