The war veterans' congress to elect a new National Executive Committee has been set for the 15th and the 16th of this month in Masvingo.

Elders of the War Veterans Committee Chairperson, Patrick Nyaruwata made the announcement while briefing the media in Harare today.

Nyaruwta, who was accompanied by some members of the war veterans elders committee, said the last properly sanctioned congress for war veterans was last held in Mutare in 2003, adding that all the other meetings that were held in between were illegal as they were not attended by representatives from the public service and the Ministry of Defence as stipulated under Section 8a of the war veterans constitution.

Outspoken war veteran and Buhera South legislator, Joseph Chinotimba and another committee member, Zenzo Ncube said ousted Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association Chairman, Jabulani Sibanda has not been invited to the congress.

40 war veterans from each province have been selected to attend the congress and Nyaruwata said the number of participants has been determined by the available resources.

The committee said adequate transport has been availed to ferry the delegates to the venue of the congress while accommodation has also been organised.

President Robert Mugabe, who is the patron of the war veterans association, mandated Nyaruwata and Victor Matemadanda to convene a congress ahead of the Zanu PF elective congress slated for next month.
