Zimbabwe empowers its people

Zimbabwe adopted a hyper-active programme to transfer the means of production from former white colonial masters to its people. Therefore an Indigenisation and Empowerment Act was enacted to legally implement this concept into a reality.

However this programme is slowly taking shape. The Indigenisation and Empowerment Board Chairperson, Cde David Chapfika said, "The implementation of the Indigenisation and Empowerment Programme is facing hurdles especially lack of adequate funding from the fiscus. Funds are required to facilitate interested parties to purchase their shares in the existing entities."

He also pointed out that, "In the 2011 National Budget, five million dollars (US$5 million) was allocated to the programme by Government but to date, only two hundred and thirty dollars (US$230) was availed. This is a noble programme that requires to be handled transparently with full accountability for it to gain reliability and credibility."

In view of this, it is a mandate that government has to commit itself and channel money to fund this national programme crafted to empower the local population.
