Tragedy struck Mount St Mary's High School in Wedza over the weekend when four students who had reportedly sneaked out of the school premises drowned while swimming in a nearby dam.
Mashonaland East police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident but could not reveal details leading to the tragedy. He, however, rubbished reports that four students had drowned.
"I can confirm that only two students lost their lives after drowning in a dam at a school in Wedza, but for now, we do not have the details yet. It is not true that four students drowned as rumoured," said Mwanza.
According to a reliable source from the school, the deceased students were in the company of 23 others and hatched a plan to go and swim in a dam located nearby. It is reported that two of the bodies were retrieved while two others are reportedly still missing.
"The students illegally got out of the school premises and went to the nearby dam to swim. Unfortunately, some of them drowned."
Efforts to get a comment from the school authorities were fruitless.
