FLAMBOYANT businessman and philanthropist Philip Chiyangwa nearly lost his N8 cellphone to Ximex Mall dealers he had extended his generosity to reported H-Metro. Chiyangwa was cruising in his personalised Bentley GT Continental in the company of Chamu Chiwanza when he made one of his casual stops at Ximex Mall along Angwa Street yesterday.
"Mudhara, mudhara, mudhara," the dealers shouted as they all swarmed around his car, The generous mogul fished out wads of greenbacks which he gave to the men to share. "Maita bho mudhara wedu, kaOne," the men thanked Chiyangwa. Meanwhile, one guy was putting his sticky fingers into the convertible car and he managed to steal the US$700 mobile phone.
Luckily, one of the grateful recipients saw this callous act and quickly snatched the cell phone from the thief's hands before returning it to Chiyangwa. All this happened in the presence of H-Metro and the thief bore the brunt of the annoyed dealers, "Ha mafesi moti munhu akupai mari momutonyerera here," one dealer said.
However the business magnate appeared unfazed by the incident and actually laughed it off. "I always come and give these guys money hameno kuti anga aba nepiwo," Chiyangwa said laughing. "You know it's the extra dollar you give them that makes a difference in their lives. Each time I come here I give them some money to make sure that they are able to feed their families and sustain themselves.
"Some of the guys I give money buy and sell airtime recharge cards, while some just buy things to sustain their families and improve their livelihood. "My hope is that they all live comfortable lives and I can see that it's working out for them. "We do not want them to be in crime, helping them will not only keep them out of crime but it will give them the much needed boost," Chiyangwa told H-Metro.
However when Chiyangwa tried to bring up the roof of his £300 000 Bentley it would not budge from the sides. It took the effort of Chiwanza to manually lift the other side up for the whole roof to enclose the car.
"Ah hona vapfana vaye zvavaita. They were all leaning against the car that is why it won't come up," Chiyangwa laughed unconcerned. Apparently his bubbly spirit was not at all dimmed by the cell phone episode. "Vapfana vacho vanondiziva havo. When they see me they know mudhara has come and I am going to keep helping them so that they remain on good financial footing to sustain their families."
Elegantly dressed in a pair of blue jeans, white shirt, white shoes and blue jacket Chiyangwa matched with the colour of his Bentley. His classy clothes were also complemented by an equally expensive smelling perfume.
