A list of short-listed candidates who underwent interviews for the positions of new Supreme Court judges has been forwarded to President Robert Mugabe for final consideration, acting secretary for the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), Justice Rita Makarau has said.

Three vacancies are available in the Supreme Court, with eight of potential candidates coming from the High Court while the other two are from the Labour Court.

Speaking to The Zimbabwe Mail yesterday, Justice Makarau said President Mugabe has been given the final list of candidates and that the JSC would hear from the president on the final outcome.

"The commissioners deliberated on the performances of the potential judges during their interviews and a list was presented to President Mugabe for final consideration in line with our new constitution, said Makarau.

She could not, however, be drawn into divulging the names of the final list of candidates.

Makarau said a list of six of the 46 candidates interviewed to fill  lots of High Court judges was also sent to the president.

"The same applies to the six final candidates whose list has been presented to President Mugabe for consideration," said Makarau.

Three weeks ago, 46 candidates aspiring to be High Court judges were interviewed in Harare.
