A 43-year-old Seke woman, who obtained two different birth certificates bearing different names and surnames for her daughter after she cheated two men into believing they both sired the child, was last week fined $100 by Chitungwiza magistrate Musaiona Shotgame.
Betty Chekecheke from Murapa village ,Demawas convicted on her plea to contravening section 27 (2)(a)of the Birth and Deaths Registry Act Chapter 5.02.
It is the state's case that on August 24, 2012, Chekecheke applied for a birth certificate at Makoni District Registry Office for her minor child Cynthia Kudakwashe Nyakuya.
The document identified the child's father as Andrew Nyakuya and indicated that the child was born at Chitungwiza Maternity Hospital in 2009.
The court heard that on January 10, 2010, Chekecheke had obtained a birth certificate for the same child whom she named Chiedza Chokuda. The document indicated that the child was born in Seke Unit K and her father was Edson Chokuda.
The matter came to light on November 11 this year when Nyakuya whom she is legally married to noticed the anomaly and brought the matter to the Central Registrar's Office.
Investigations later led to Chekecheke's arrest.
Wilson Matsika prosecuted while Daniel Gozhora represented the Central Registrar's Office.
