Number of Zimbabwean students in US increase by 3.1%

The number of Zimbabwean students studying in the United States (US) has increased by 3,1%.
According to the 2014 Open Doors report released by the US Institute of International Education (IIE) on Monday, 1 106 local students went to study in the US during the 2013-2014 academic year, which is a 3,1% increase from 1 170 students in the 2012-2013 academic year.
The report shows that 888 052 students from around the world went to study in the US between 2013-2014 as compared to 819 644 students during the 2012-2013 academic year.
The number of students from southern Africa studying in the US also increased by 3,1% to 5 683 within the same period compared to 5 511 in the 2012/13 academic year.
Of all the countries in the world, Asia supplied the highest number of students studying in the US at 568,510 during the period under review.
"The number of international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 8% to a record high of 886 052 students in the 2013/14 academic year, confirming once again that the United States remains the destination of choice for higher education," the report said.
The United States hosts more of the world's 4,5 million globally mobile college and university students than any other country in the world, with almost double the number hosted by the United Kingdom, the second leading host country.
The Open Doors report says America has 289 408 students studying abroad for academic credit from their US colleges and universities.
"More American students - a total of 289 408 - studied abroad for academic credit from their US colleges and universities, although the 2% increase represents a slightly slower rate of growth than the previous year," the report further said.
The Open Doors report is published annually by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
