Six die in kombi, truck accident

Six people died, four of them on the spot, while another six were seriously injured after a haulage truck and a commuter omnibus collided in Chipinge along the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway on Thursday evening.
The other two people died from injuries they sustained on admission at a nearby hospital after the two vehicles sideswiped at the 173-kilometre-peg along that road.
It is believed that one of the vehicles tried to avoid cattle that had strayed onto the highway and encroached into the opposite lane.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident and said names of the deceased had not yet been released.
"I can confirm the deaths of six people in that accident which occurred at around 7.30pm when a haulage truck and a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus sideswiped at the 173-kilometre-peg along the Ngundu-Tanganda Highway," said Nyathi.
Names of the deceased were still being withheld, he said.
Nyathi said the accident occurred after the driver of the haulage truck steered away from stray cattle resulting in him sideswiping with the commuter omnibus that was going in the opposite direction.
The minibus had 11 people on board.
He said the minibus veered off the road after the collusion, resultantly somersaulting but landed on its wheels while the truck similarly veered off the road to its right, blocking the lane in the process.
"We are investigating further to get finer details but we urge public service vehicles to travel during day in order to avoid unnecessary loss of life," said Nyathi.
