An alleged rogue police officer from Harare, Edmore Banda is before the courts facing several charges of theft of motor vehicles.
Banda (27) was arrested for allegedly committing a spate of armed robberies in Harare and is at Harare Central Remand Prison holding cells, pending trial.
He is expected to appear before High Court judge, Justice Priscilla Chigumba seeking bail.
Banda was stationed at Milton Police Station during the time that he allegedly committed the offences.
According to state prosecutor, Henry Muringani on the 11th of October this year, the accused approached Samson Muchenje, a taxi driver, while he was parked at corner Mbuya Nehanda and Jason Moyo streets in Harare, pretending to be a genuine traveller.
Banda reportedly paid US$10, claiming he wanted to be taken to his girlfriend's place in Sunridge.
In Sunridge, the court heard, Banda asked Muchenje to stop the car, saying he had arrived at his girlfriend's place.
He suddenly produced a webley revolver, which he pointed at Muchenje, ordering him to surrender his valuables and leave the car.
Muchenje attempted to resist, prompting Banda to fire one shot in the air.
Fearing for his life, Muchenje disembarked from the car, and Banda reportedly sped off, leaving him stranded.
Banda was later spotted by four police officers who were on patrol, towing the stolen car the following day.
He was asked to stop but fled from the scene, and the police officers gave a spirited chase, prompting Banda to fire four shots in the air.
The cops retreated as Banda made good his escape.
The car was eventually recovered but had been stripped of several of its parts, including the battery, radiator, fan and tyres.
Using the same modus operandi, Banda also pounced on Reuben Machiridza, who was also a taxi-driver and stole his car, before embarking on another botched robbery.
