A 43-year-old man was dragged to court for allegedly making a false report to the police that he had been robbed of his gun when he lost it through negligence.
Jabulani Sibanda of Tshabalala yesterday appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Sibongile Msipa facing two counts of failure to secure a fire arm and deliberately supplying false information to a public authority.
He pleaded guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Msipa ordered him to pay $50 for the first charge and acquitted him on the second one.
Prosecuting, Nkathazo Dlodlo told the court that on November 28 at around 9PM, Sibanda left his vehicle parked along Leopold Takawira Avenue in the city centre.
"Sibanda left the doors and windows open. His Taurus Revolver was in the car.
"He came back a couple of minutes later only to discover the gun was missing," said Dlodlo.
The court heard that the following day at around 11PM Sibanda allegedly filed a false report of a robbery at Bulawayo Central Police Station.
In his report he alleged that he was robbed of $179 cash, Nokia N3 cellphone and the revolver.
"Investigations were instituted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Homicide and it was discovered that Sibanda had filed a false report to cover up for failing to secure his firearm," said Dlodlo.
He was then arrested.
