A 71-YEAR-OLD Masvingo man died while in a drunken stupor after he fell headlong in a ditch, Chief Chikwanda has confirmed.
"I can confirm receiving a report to that effect but I'm yet to be furnished with full details of what exactly transpired," said Chief Chikwanda.
The incident happened on Sunday at around 8AM and the body was taken to Masvingo General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Alfred Fana Jack of Ruwenda Resettlement, Village 5, reportedly spent the day drinking opaque beer with his friend Tererai Zimudzi at Plot 77 in the same village.
A neighbour told Chronicle a drunk Jack was later seen staggering as he made his way home.
"After having one too many, Jack who looked very drunk, left for home at about 12PM. He walked with difficulty and was staggering. He would sometimes fall down and get assistance from other patrons," said John Ziwini.
He said after walking for some distance, Jack was seen by Shaudzirai Jasi, 47, who helped him pass his homestead.
"At around 2PM, Patrick Muteyewa, 27, of Plot 85 and Simplisio Hozheri, 37, were coming from bathing at Mutera River when they found Jack lying in a ditch. He was facing downwards but the pair managed to identify him, although they were afraid to move closer.
"They then rushed to his homestead where they advised Jack's brother, Gopozi Ziwa, 63, who went to the scene and found Jack already dead. He was bleeding from the nose and mouth," said the neighbour.
The matter was reported to Masvingo police who went to the scene and took the body to Masvingo General Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
