Ambassador Phelekezela Mphoko deserves the post of Vice-President because he has a long history in the struggle. In fact, his liberation war credentials are impeccable. I fully support his appointment.
All this while, he has been somewhat of an unsung liberation war hero. Yet, he is a founding member of Zapu's military wing - Zipra.
He was sent to Lusaka, Zambia where he joined the struggle before Zipra was formed.
In Lusaka, he was part of a committee that was established to form the Zipra military wing led by Akim Ndlovu. That committee included people like Dumiso Dabengwa, Ambrose Mutinhiri, Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo and other prominent revolutionaries.
When we formed Zipa - which was aimed at uniting Zipra and Zanla - he was part of this initiative. It was, however, unfortunate that Zipa failed to succeed.
After the failure of Zipa, he took office in Maputo, Mozambique, where he was Zapu's representative. This was a very important assignment because Mozambique supported Zipra's incursions into Southern Rhodesia.
He was the man who would report to us and brief us on everything that was happening in Mozambique.
He acquired the name "Report" because we knew he was a reliable person who would give us accurate reports of what was going on in Mozambique.
In fact, I knew him solely by this name and only learnt that his real name is Phelekezela Mphoko after Independence. He was joined in Mozambique by Jacob Zuma (now South Africa's president), who was his close friend.
Report also had a good relationship with Mozambique's late leader, the iconic Samora Machel. In retrospect, all can see that he is the man who helped us maintain good relations with Mozambique, which was our strategic partner in the struggle.
The alliance that was there between Zapu and the ANC was because of people like VP Mphoko.
He commanded some operations that were conducted by the two forces, together with comrades such as Chris Hani and Joe Modise from the ANC.
That is why in 1976 he was one of the officials at the formation of the Patriotic Front, with luminaries like Jason Ziyapapa Moyo, Joseph Msika and George Silundika. His work also meant that he was Zipra's intelligence person.
This is why, after Independence he joined the intelligence department.
He also carried on with the struggle, and played the very important role of implementing the Unity Accord between Zanu and Zapu. He was one of the people assigned to facilitate the integration of the two parties.
