THE Chipinge District Civil Protection Committee has warned communities, especially those in low-lying parts of the district, of the possibility of heavy rains and flash-flooding until the end the year.
The district began to receive heavy rains last week on Wednesday with dry parts of the district such as Chibuwe, Mutema, Checheche and Middle Sabi recording high rainfall.
Every year these areas experience flooding because of the geographical site of the Sabi valley.
District Civil Protection Committee acting chairperson, Mr Mavhiza, said the committee is advising all communities in Chipinge that there is possibility of flash flooding especially in low lying areas in the period 13-31 December.
"We have received information from the Met department indicating that there will be increased rainfall of above 50mm and a high likelihood of lightning. We are further advised that people must take necessary precaution such as avoiding crossing flooded rivers, avoiding parking and standing under trees, avoiding walking in the rain and making sure all electrical appliances are safe," he said.
Mr Mavhiza appeals to all members of the District Civil Protection Committee to be ready to save lives during this period.
"Given the likely situation and possible consequences, all members of the committee are further advised that we will all on standby during this time. We kindly appeal to you to be prepared for any eventualities and emergencies. Everyone in the district is advised that he/she has a role to play.
"We are also encouraging everyone to take action and spread the message to all members of staff as well as your family and friends," he added.
