AXED Energy and Power Development Deputy Minister Engineer Munacho Mutezo this week reacted angrily to allegations of corruption and siphoning of ZESA Holdings money levelled against him, saying his hands are clean and is not accountable to the media or the public.
Engineer Mutezo, who on Wednesday called The Manica Post fuming, described reports in the media as "total lies and exaggerations of the truth".
He also questioned why The Manica Post and The Herald were persecuting "a man who is already down and out".
"Ndanyanyotadzei vakomana kubva mati nanga nanga neni? Handina kutora mari yekuZESA ndichiisa muhomwe mangu. (What sin have I committed deserving all this bad publicity?
"I did not source ZESA money for my own pockets) All donations, including the ZESA money went to accounts controlled by the leadership of the party.
"You are then asking me to account to The Herald and The Manica Post every cent of donations I sourced. I am not accountable to newspapers, but to Zanu-PF.
"Why should I tell you details of the party's finances? Why should I make it public? Were you told how all the money raised for the Zanu-PF 6th National Congress was sourced? I am a professional and I have sourced funding for my constituency on my own. Where is your morality? Let's be humane. It's not right to dedicate acres of space from page one to page five on Mutezo alone,'' he said.
On allegations that he asked ZESA to settle accommodation bills after he booked into a hotel in Mutare with his wife and two other unknown persons, Engineer Mutezo said it was common knowledge that Government ministers travel with two other people, the driver and the aide. But could not say why he asked ZESA to settle the bill.
Responding to claims that he abused ZESA assets, which included a bus, the former deputy minister said the ZESA bus was not only used in his constituency but also other places like the Midlands and Matebeleland provinces.
"You wrote that I abused ZESA assets, the vehicles and the bus, but that bus was used for the benefit of Zanu-PF. Party members in Kwekwe and Matebeleland North have also used that bus. So it's not me alone. Why pick me alone, I am just a small cog of the wheel. We are not supposed to talk about these things in public,'' he said.
Engineer Mutezo who was fired by President Mugabe last week is alleged to have coerced ZESA Holdings to deposit $40 000 in the Zanu-PF Manicaland Women's League account in July this year. His wife, Loveness, who was booted out of the party structures was the deputy provincial women's league chairperson and signatory to the account.
