Newly appointed Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko says Zimbabweans have a duty to preserve and build on the legacy of unity and oneness among the people for national progress and stability.
In an interview with the ZBC, Vice President Mphoko said the road towards unity was not a one day event but a process which began when the revolutionary parties Zanu PF and PF ZAPU were still waging the war of independence.
This was through the efforts of Hebert Chitepo, Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo, among others.
Mphoko said the conclusion of the 1987 Unity Accord between President Robert Mugabe and the late Father Zimbabwe, Dr Joshua Nkomo should be preserved and cherished as it brought stability and an enabling environment for socio-economic progress.
This year marks the 27th anniversary of the Unity Accord which was signed on the 22nd of December 1987.
In honour of Father Zimbabwe, one of the nation's founding fathers, Bulawayo airport has since been renamed Joshua Mqhabuko Nkomo Airport.
Last year, Dr Nkomo's statue was erected in Bulawayo.
