515 road accidents, 31 people killed

Police say 515 road accidents have been recorded today compared to 470 during the same period last year.

Police spokesperson, Chief Superintendant Paul Nyathi said 31 people have died during the holidays, which is the same number of people killed last year.

He said 262 people were injured compared to 138 last year adding that they have impounded 1 239 vehicles for defects while 52 150 tickets were issued out for various traffic offences.

Chief Superintendant Nyathi said major causes of accidents include speeding, overtaking errors and failure to give way by drivers on approaching road junctions, intersections and other controlled points.

He appealed to drivers to adhere to road rules and regulations and to value people's lives.
