The Zimbabwe Passenger Association (ZPA) has expressed concern over the unjustified fare increases by long distance transport operators ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Speaking to ZBC's Voice of Zimbabwe, ZPA secretary general Paul Makiwa said most local long distance bus and commuter omnibus operators have doubled their fares which is unfair on the customer.

Makiwa cited the Bulawayo-Lupane route which has doubled to US$20 from the regulated US$10, among other routes.

He said the Road Motor Transport Act stipulates that any fare increases should be gazetted by the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing and the Transport and Infrastructural Development Ministry, adding that any fare increases during the festive season are unconstitutional.

He said it is imperative that all transport operators display the fare table so that passengers can pay the regulated fares.
