Gweru City Council fails to collect refuse

Gweru City Council is battling to improve refuse collection as heaps of garbage are mounting at Kudzanayi bus termini, posing a health hazard to the vendors.

Vendors at the terminus are calling on council to remove a transit dumping site at the terminus which has become a health hazard to them.

People who spoke to ZBC said the heaps of decomposing garbage at the market place have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and an outbreak of cholera is looming, especially in this rainy season.

Meanwhile, the council's Acting Director of Health Christopher Simbisayi Ruwodo said although they collect refuse at the terminus twice a week, there is need for the vendors to adopt a culture of placing litter in bins so as to maintain a cleaner environment.

Ruwodo said the city council has prioritised waste management in the 2015 budget and they will be acquiring large skip bins for major refuse centres in town.

Laws governing waste management, mainly enshrined in the Environmental Management Act empower institutions like city councils to collect refuse.
