The festive season has so far claimed 81 people after 3 more died in road accidents recorded on Saturday the 27th of December.

The figure translates to an 8 percent increase as compared to the 75 who died in 2013.

Despite continued campaigns by all stakeholders to reduce road carnage, statistics indicate that the number of accidents continues to increase with the period between 15 and 27 December claiming 81 people on the country's roads.

Police statistics indicate that 81 people died in 1 012 road accidents.

During the same period in 2013, 75 were killed in 822 road accidents.

Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, however, said there has been a significant reduction in the number of people killed after Christmas compared to the same period last year.

"Three people died on the 27th compared to 6 people in 2013, meaning there was a 50 percent reduction in the number of people who died on our roads. 54 people were injured compared to 67 last year, showing a 19 percent reduction in the number of people who got injured.

"We impounded 106 vehicles for defects and being unroadworthy. We issued out 6 978 tickets for various traffic offences," said Chief Superintendent Nyathi.

According to the statistics, more accidents occur on Christmas Eve while the New Year's Eve is another day where all road users are expected to be cautious.

Human error has been cited in most accidents and the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads has also contributed as well as the state of the roads.

With the rehabilitation of roads countrywide being a long term effort by the government in trying to contain road accidents, the number of accidents being recorded means more still needs to be done to change the attitude of road users.
