A police constable stationed at ZRP Kwekwe District Headquarters allegedly stole an FBC Bank ATM card from a fellow constable before transacting with the card at a local supermarket.

The matter came to light when the card owner, Sinalisiwe Hapanamambo, received a text message from her Bank (FBC Kwekwe) confirming the successful withdrawal of $387 at TM Supermarket on her mobile phone.

Hapanamambo filed a report at Kwekwe Central Police Station under RRB number 2192507 and CR 150/12/14 respectively and investigations were conducted leading to the arrest of Constable Melody Kasekete and her accomplice Tendai Muzinda, who is employed as a registry clerk at the same station.

This was after the complainant had inquired about the transaction at her bank. A statement on her account revealed that the transaction was made at TM Supermarket. She approached the supermarket's branch manager Livingstone Ntini, who rewound the CCTV used to monitor activities in the supermarket and it showed the accused pair's actions.

The two were charged with theft as defined under Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9.23 before it was withdrawn after Hapanamambo's husband, Everisto Musekiwa, pleaded with his wife to withdraw the case.

The case was subsequently withdrawn before plea at the Kwekwe Magistrates' Court on Monday.

The two were served with memorandum of suspension on in terms of Section 47 of the police Act Chapter 11.10 on December 26. They have since been transferred from Kwekwe DHQ to Kwekwe Main Camp until finalisation of the matter.

According to the memorandum of suspension, both shall relinquish their powers as police officers and will put on dress order number 5 (riot gear), but they shall not wear their badges of rank.
