Corrupt cops blamed for increased accidents

Members of the public have attributed the increase in road accidents to corrupt police officers and unlicensed drivers.

Speaking to the ZBC, members of the public said the accidents can only be avoided if city council authorities and members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police shun corruption.

Other people said there is a need to impound un-roadworthy vehicles and stop giving offenders of road offences tickets for serious offences.

Some commuter omnibus operators have also put the blame on police officers, saying they are responsible for road accidents.

A survey by the ZBC revealed that most roads do not have road signs while pot holes are a common feature in most roads.

Meanwhile, the death toll from road accidents during the festive season stood at 91 by yesterday.

Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the development yesterday, attributing most of the accidents to speeding, overtaking errors and poor judgement by some drivers.
