KWEKWE - A senior police officer was killed when the vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident in Kwekwe along the Bulawayo-Harare Highway on New Year's Day.

An unidentified friend told the NewsDay that the deceased, identified as Detective Nyasha Verengai who was stationed at CID Kwekwe, was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser in the early hours of New Year's Day when the accident occurred. He was alone.

"We spent part of the evening with Verengai at the Golden Mile Hotel as we celebrated the coming of the New Year on December 31 2014, but he left us without a word only to hear that he had been involved in a fatal accident," the friend said.

He said Verengai, who was coming from a local hotel where he had been merry-making with fiends on New Year's Eve, lost control of the vehicle and hit a traffic sign.

The vehicle then swerved out of the road and side swiped a tree before ramming into a precast-wall and rammed into the Tropicana Hotel wall.

Verengai died on the spot and the vehicle he had allegedly borrowed from his friend, Everisto Musekiwa, a gold panner was a complete write-off.

Kwekwe traffic police attended the scene and the deceased's body was conveyed to Kwekwe General Hospital, while the vehicle wreckage was taken to VID Kwekwe.

Police could not immediately confirm the accident.
