Over 20 people need urgent rescue from where they are trapped after floods, which have so far claimed 10 lives in Mashonaland West province.

The flooded Angwa river burst its banks and affected the near-by village, killing two people and leaving at least 14 marooned.

The first incident saw eight people being marooned, and six of them survived by holding on to branches, and are still trapped on the island.

Police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba said in the Chikuti Mining area in Mashonaland West, at Two Tree bridge along Angwa River, 20 people were marooned and two were swept away after they hung on tree branches and their bodies have not yet been recovered.

In Rafingora, two had to find temporary refuge in a tree, while two are trapped in a Sabot haulage truck that was swept away trying to cross a flooded river in Mhangura.

This brings to 22 all the people known to be trapped after the incessant rains in the province.

Rescue operations are being hampered by bad weather that is making it impossible for the Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopters to fly.

Earlier, eight people died after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by the flooded Ngwazani river near Kadoma.
