Zimbabwean police have not made a breakthrough in ongoing investigations into allegations that former vice president Joice Mujuru attempted to assassinate President Robert Mugabe, state media reported Sunday.

According to the Sunday Mail, a crack team of police detectives appointed last month to investigate Mujuru and other senior ruling Zanu-PF officials accused of plotting to kill Mugabe had failed to find any incriminating evidence against the former vice president.

It said the police have also failed the crack cases involving the mysterious break-in at the offices of senior government officials over the past four months.

"I have no official comment about those cases," police spokesperson Charity Charamba told the paper.

According to the paper, the failure by the law enforcement agents to crack the outstanding issues has raised "fears that something tragic could happen before the police make any arrests."

State media made sensational claims ahead of the Zanu-PF elective congress in December 2014 that Mujuru had ganged with a cabal of senior officials in a plot to violent remove Mugabe from power and replace him with the former vice president as party leaders and state president.

Mujuru has denied the allegations, saying they are part of the Zanu-PF succession fighting.
