A provincial committee headed by Zanu-PF's vice-chairperson for Matabeleland North, Nelson Sibanda, has been set up to oversee preparations for a belated 91st birthday for President Robert Mugabe to be held in Victoria Falls on February 28.
In an interview yesterday, provincial chair Richard Moyo said the province was honoured to host the birthday celebrations for the statesman who has carved a name for himself by his unfliching stand against "neo-colonial bullies" in the international political arena.
"We are honoured as Matabeleland North to host such a big event which has been set for February 28 in Victoria Falls and as usual we promise to leave no stone unturned in the preparations for the event," he said. "We have put in place a committee to oversee local preparations for this national event. My deputy who is based in Victoria Falls, Comrade Nelson Sibanda is leading the committee and is ably assisted by the provincial party youth chairperson, Tamuka Nyoni. This committee incorporates some members of the main wing, youth and women's wings as well as local businesspeople. The national youth league has not given us the budget and other requirements as yet but we will have a party provincial executive committee in two weeks time to review progress and then hold a similar meeting as the provincial co-ordinating committee later."
President Mugabe was born in Kutama, Mashonaland West on February 21 1924 and is the patron of a youth movement dubbed the 21st February Movement which promotes the rights of children and young people and inculcates in young people those qualities that their mentor espouses, like discipline, hardwork and honesty.
President Mugabe, who has championed the cause to ensure young people receive adequate education resulting in the country being rated one of the best in Africa in terms of literacy, is himself a holder of seven academic degrees and has been sponsoring scholarships for economically disadvanataged but intellectually gifted students to further their education (in South Africa).
Last year's 21st February Movement celebrations were held in Marondera, the Mashonaland East capital.
