The Zimbabwe Institute of Rural and Urban Planners says the continued sprouting of unplanned and illegal settlements across the country is unsustainable as it does not guarantee security of tenure to the residents.

Illegal settlements under the guise of cooperatives have continued to sprout in and around all major urban areas.

Zimbabwe Institute of Rural and Urban Planners President, Mr Percy Toriro said such lack of planning is not sustainable, adding that besides disturbing the ecosystem, it could endanger people's lives.

Developers, who are overlooking the issue of planning, have also been described as doing a disservice to the settlers as they will not be able to get title deeds.

Analysts say while the high demand for housing can not be wished away, it can not be solved by using illegal means.
